Can love win in the end?
American Anthem was exactly what I have come to expect from B.J. Hoff. It was sweet and deep, the theme forgiveness. This book combines a series of three books entitled Prelude, Cadence, and Jubilee. I found that it was extremely similar to the Emerald Ballad series. I thought that maybe the author could have done better in creating different situations for her characters since she already used most of the same situations in her Emerald series. But American Anthem was a good book, nonetheless.
Michel Emmanuel, Susanna, Vangie, Conn, and Doctor Andrew were all marvelously developed characters. They had their strengths and weaknesses, and felt very human. I perhaps would have liked to have seen Michel’s daughter more in the book, but there were already so many characters I can understand why she wasn’t developed as much.
I think that Michel Emmanuel was my one of my favorite characters. He was strong and talented with a heart for God and his daughter. I loved how he overcame his blindness and used it for the glory of God. Doctor Andrew was also a favorite of mine. He was so genuine and sweet that I was surprised to learn of his past dark secret. And I wanted to help him somehow when I learned that he had rheumatoid arthritis.
I always enjoy BJ Hoff immensely. She creates unforgettable characters, and often has them go through horrible trials in order to come out a better person. And I always learn something of historical value when I read one of her books.
All in all, I give American Anthem four out of five stars.
